What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on physical therapy based on the principle of removing obstacles to the body’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing them to function effectively. This might be by improving skeletal alignment, or relieving and releasing muscular tension to improve blood flow and waste product removal.

Osteopathy is rooted in the idea that all the body’s systems are related and that a problem in one area may likely lead to other problems elsewhere. This makes osteopathy inherently holistic, and osteopaths are experts at tracing the root cause of a problem where pain may manifest in a different location.

Book An Appointment

Booking an appointment is simple using our online system, allowing you to choose an appointment time that suits you, and to reserve your time and pay online.

At your first appointment we will take a full case history and give you time to explain your symptoms and concerns. We will carry out a full examination and explain the most appropriate treatments for your needs and how you can remain healthy in future.

What Do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopaths work with the musculoskeletal system and can help with conditions that are related to problems with the spine, joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. This makes osteopathy ideal for treating spinal problems such as back pain and neck pain, and typical muscle and tendon issues such as tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and plantar fasciitis. Osteopathy is also an ideal treatment for most minor sports injuries. See all conditions we treat.

Osteopaths are experts in posture, and are able to improve postural alignment to treat and prevent pain, and help you develop good postural habits. This can also include assessing your gait and stance in order to recommend the right shoes or orthotic insoles to keep you standing tall and pain-free.

Techniques Used in Osteopathy

Osteopaths are trained in a wide range of physical therapy techniques. These include direct spine and joint manipulation techniques, soft tissue techniques such as myofascial release and deep tissue massage, joint mobilisation and stretching.

Whilst there is some overlap in the techniques used by osteopaths and other physical therapists, what sets osteopathy apart is its holistic nature in considering the function of the entire body when relating to any given problem. This perfectly suits our approach at Poplar Osteopathy Clinic, where we work with you to help you understand your body and the root causes of any problems you are experiencing, and stay in full health.

What Training do Osteopaths Have?

Osteopaths complete a minimum 4-year degree in osteopathy, and are registered and regulated in the UK by the General Osteopathic Council. Osteopaths also all complete regular Continuing Professional Development to improve their skills and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare.

Osteopaths are also trained First Contact or Primary Health Practitioners, able to assess your problem in the first instance and refer you to the correct service if osteopathy is not the most appropriate treatment for you. Like physiotherapy, osteopathy is recognised as one of the 14 Allied Health Professions, and many osteopaths work in musculoskeletal departments of the NHS.

Your First Appointment

Your First Appointment

At your first appointment your osteopath will take the time to listen and understand what has brought you to the clinic, and take a brief medical history of any relevant factors. They will then move on to an examination, both of the affected area and of your general biomechanics, and in most cases will be able to give you a professional diagnosis immediately.

You can expect to receive treatment at your first appointment and in most cases you will notice an immediate improvement in your symptoms. Your osteopath will explain the most appropriate treatments for you and create a bespoke treatment plan, explaining what to expect and how many sessions you are likely to need. If you have not had any particular treatment before, your osteopath will explain and demonstrate.
