What Is a Sports Massage?

What Is a Sports Massage?

Sports massage doesn’t refer to any particular massage techniques, but rather to the overall approach of the massage. Whereas a spa-type massage may be given primarily to help you to relax and feel good, sports massage is a massage that is focused on therapeutic benefits only, i.e. releasing muscle knots, increasing range of motion and flexibility, and encouraging optimal muscular health and performance.

It’s not necessary to be a sportsperson or engage in any particular physical activity to benefit from a sports massage, and anyone who has stiff or aching muscles may be recommended to have one or several sports massages. This could be due to overdoing it, recovering from an injury, or just feeling tight and sore from inactivity. If you’d like to discuss whether sports massage might be right for your particular case, please don’t hesitate to book a free 15-minute telephone or in-person consultation.

What Can Sports Massage Help With?

There are many reasons to get a sports massage. As mentioned above your muscles may be stiff or sore from physical activity – called delayed onset muscle soreness – or simply stiff from spending too much time at your desk. Sports massage can help reduce pain and promote recovery by increasing blood and lymph flow, speeding waste products away from the muscles and increasing the presence of freshly oxygenated blood.

For general muscle health and condition, sports massage can also help to improve muscle efficiency, increase flexibility, recover faster from injuries and make injury less likely to occur in the first place. They can also help with general relaxation and wellbeing, including better sleep.

When Should I Have a Sports Massage?

When Should I Have a Sports Massage?

There are no rules about when is the best time to have a sports massage. Whilst many elite athletes may have a massage immediately after a tough event or training session, many other people find that a sports massage a day or two after is more beneficial to them, or even before an event as they taper down their training, to be in the best possible condition on the day.

Many people also find that a regular sports massage is beneficial to their sport or to their overall physical wellbeing. This might be weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or just when they feel they need it. Your therapist will be able to help you decide when is the best frequency for you, and at Poplar Osteopathic Clinic we will also help to give you the knowledge and techniques you need to look after your muscles yourself when you are not in the clinic.

Sports Massage or Osteopathy?

There is no simple answer to whether sports massage or osteopathy might be the best therapy to help you with any particular problem. Generally, if you have aching and sore muscles but no other underlying problem, or you just want to keep your body in top condition, then sports massage may be more appropriate to you, whereas if you have an acute or chronic injury or are worried about a joint or postural problem, you may find osteopathy more effective.

Our osteopaths and sports massage practitioners Aimee and Rhodri are both experienced in both treatments, and can examine you and advise you on the treatment that is most appropriate for you. It is often the case that pain in one area of the body may be a secondary condition brought on by a problem somewhere else, i.e. a muscle pain might be caused by joint misalignment or a joint problem caused by muscle tightness, and we will be able to effectively diagnose this and recommend the best course of action for you.

Qualifications and Regulation

There is no official qualification for sports massage therapists in the UK, as it is a treatment that can be performed by many different types of therapists. However, osteopaths are perfectly suited to give sports massage treatment. All osteopaths train for a minimum of 4 years and have a deep understanding of the body and the muscular system, and are trained in various massage techniques and palpation.

Osteopaths are regulated in the UK by the General Osteopathic Council. Osteopathy is one of the 14 Allied Health Professions, and many osteopaths work in musculoskeletal departments of the NHS. Osteopaths are also Primary Care Practitioners, trained as a first point of entry into the healthcare system, and able to accurately diagnose problems and refer to a different service if more appropriate.
