What to do when your low back goes?

It can be incredibly scary when you suffer from a bout of acute low back pain. When your back goes it can be hugely debilitating and leave you unable to bend, walk, sit down. Sometimes all you want to do is just lie down and not move. The question is, what is the best method to get you back up and moving again as quickly as possible?

Our advice for acute low back pain

The advice that we give is to keep as active as possible but not ignoring the fact that the pain is still there. We need to move gently and slowly, as much as possible without aggravating the symptoms. Finding positions of ease and movements that can decrease your pain. Unfortunately, there is not a 1-size-fits-all exercise for low low back pain. People have different triggers and feel pain on different movement. Exercises that make some people feel better will make others feel worse. Examples of great exercises in that initial painful period are Cat cow, pelvic tilts, breathing exercises, knee hugs, child’s pose and many more gentle mobility exercises. There is a whole section of back exercises in the in the free Facebook group! So if you’re struggling join us and have a look.

Take pain relief. People often worry that taking relief as mask the pain and they might more do more damage. This is unlikely and studies show that people who take pain relief initially after an injury recover sooner than those that don’t. This is because the pain relief will take the edge off and that will allow you to move a little bit more naturally as opposed to tensing everything and guarding from pain. If you are on any other medications consult a GP or pharmacist before taking any other medication.

When we suffer with acute low back pain, our body goes into a sense of stress which will increase the pain and increased muscle tightness. Slowing down breathing and focusing on longer exhales or practising body scans or meditation can really really help reduce those pains. Again, clink on the link above to the facebook group for guided medications.

The reality of low back pain is that most instances will start to get better after a few days so try not to panic.
