Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in the joints and surrounding tissues. It is typically characterised by symptoms such as joint pain, decreased mobility, swelling and stiffness. The severity of the symptoms can vary from person to person, with more acute cases often restricting an individual’s ability to perform normal everyday tasks.
There are various forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and gout. It was estimated in January 2022 that around 10 million people suffer from arthritis in the UK alone, the most commonly diagnosed type of arthritis being osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis typically refers to the degeneration of joint cartilage, resulting in stiffness and pain when moving. These symptoms can become worse when a joint has remained stationary for a time, causing increased pain, visibly swollen joints, a grinding or cracking sensation with movement or weakness of the muscles over time. The condition can affect any joint in the body but is most often associated with the knees, hip or small joints in the hand, manifesting in the inability to stand, bend over, walk or climb stairs, or perform dexterous tasks with your hand such as writing or typing. Some cases can present visibly “bent” finger joints and swelling or even develop painful cysts on the back of the hand.

As part of a typical healthy and active lifestyle, our joints endure constant movement, strain and low-level stress and damage through exercise and repetitive movement. Most of this damage is repaired by the body’s natural function or prevented by protective cartilage on the joints. This layer of protective cartilage on the ends of your bones can wear with time and age, leading to the development of bony growths, causing inflammation, reduced movement, discomfort and pain. The exact cause of osteoarthritis remains unknown, however, it is generally accepted that certain lifestyle choices and natural causes are a significant factor in the development of the condition. These can include age, weight or even previous injury. Family history of the condition may also be significant however a specific gene has not yet been confirmed as the cause.

Osteoarthritis is a long-term condition that cannot be cured. When treated appropriately however, the progression of symptoms can be slowed, stopped, or even in some cases actively reduced and improved. The most common forms of treatment for osteoarthritis usually involve mild lifestyle changes such as losing weight, regular exercise, the use of support devices on affected joints or physical therapies such as osteopathy. More extreme cases may require corrective surgery or painkiller medication.
Osteopathy is an excellent treatment option for osteoarthritis, particularly musculoskeletal manipulation to reduce inflammation and increase movement typically restricted by osteoarthritis. The focus of osteopathy is not about medication, painkillers or invasive treatments, instead prioritising manual, movement-based treatments such as specialised exercise, stretches and soft tissue massage, concentrating on the musculoskeletal system, nervous system and your body’s circulation. We also can offer advice on lifestyle changes to improve your condition, whether it be dietary or nutritional suggestions or exercises to be done at home. Osteopathy is one of the 14 recognised Allied Health Professions, with our specialists training for a minimum of 4 years and registering with the General Osteopathic Council here in the UK. The practice is also recognised by the NHS and major medical insurers.
