There are many causes of back pain, and your osteopath will be able to help you to understand the underlying causes and target the problem at its root. In some cases this may be obvious, for example if you have injured your back whilst lifting a heavy object or performing an unnatural movement.
In our modern society much back pain is also caused by poor postural habits such as spending a long time at your desk or driving. It is not always obvious how to look after your spine or to maintain awareness of your posture, and we are here to help you not just with treatments but also with advice on lifestyle modifications, stretches and exercises that can maintain a healthy back in the long term.
Back pain can also be a result of other chronic conditions – such as sciatica or scoliosis – causing pain either biomechanically, or as a result of nerve issues caused by the condition. Chronic pain conditions can also lead to the chronic pain cycle, where pain is caused by inactivity which in turn leads to further pain. Other musculoskeletal problems in the body can also lead to back pain, for example postural imbalances caused by foot pain or wearing the wrong shoes.
General health and wellbeing is also a large factor in back pain, and you can help yourself to stay healthy by looking after yourself, taking regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding alcohol and smoking.

Pregnancy is one of the biggest causes of back pain, and something 4 in 5 women will go through in their lifetime. The weight of the baby can cause great strain on the back, pulling the body forwards and forcing the muscles of the lower back to work harder to maintain an upright posture. Pregnancy can also lead to a softening of certain spinal structures, putting you at a greater risk of pain and of chronic conditions such as sciatica.
We work with many expectant mothers to keep your spine healthy and make your pregnancy as pain-free as possible. Aimee and Rhodri have two children of their own, and Rhodri is also a pregnancy massage specialist. Contact us to discuss where you are in your pregnancy and what treatments can help you.
Osteopathy is an ideal treatment for most back pain. Osteopaths are postural and spinal experts trained to see the body as a whole and identify what issues may be affecting your overall biomechanics and causing back pain. We use a range of physical therapy techniques, in particular direct spinal manipulation – allowing us to directly realign your spinal vertebrae – but also a range of soft tissue techniques such as deep tissue massage and sports massage, mobilisation and stretching. Osteopaths do not prescribe painkillers or use any invasive treatments.
Osteopaths train for a minimum of 4 years and are registered in the UK by the General Osteopathic Council. Osteopathy is recognised as one of the 14 Allied Health Professions and many osteopaths also work in musculoskeletal departments of the NHS. You can learn more about osteopathy on our osteopathy page.
At Poplar Osteopathic Clinic we are here not just to fix your problem in the short term but to give you the knowledge and understanding you need to maintain a healthy back in the long term. We will explain what is causing your back problems and give you exercises, stretches, and simple-to-follow postural advice. Aimee is also a yoga teacher and combines these two disciplines to give you all the tools you need to stay healthy in the long term.
We are also able to give you advice on workstation setup, the best mattress, chair and so on, to maintain a healthy spine day-to-day and avoid any further problems. Every person’s posture and spine is unique, and tailored advice from a physical therapy expert is key to taking control of your back pain.
